Shifting the integration paradigm

API Management and System Centralization at Banco Credibom

ABOUT THIS SUCCESS CASE

Banco Credibom, in partnership with Xpand IT, implemented a WSO2 middleware platform to standardize and centralize system integration, increasing process agility, security, and visibility. The solution enabled the creation of reusable services and facilitated API management, improving the quality and monitoring of operations.

SCOPE OF THIS SOLUTION

  • WSO2
  • Standardization and centralization
  • Agility and reusability
  • Security and monitoring

Challenge

Following a core system reformulation that started in 2017, Banco Credibom required the implementation of a robust middleware platform to allow the sustainable growth of integration between systems in the organization.

There had already been middleware initiatives in the past, but they relied mainly on point-to-point and tight-coupled integrations, lacking efficient visibility, traceability and governance capabilities.

The main purpose of this initiative was to create a layer of abstraction and the standardization of integrations, while accelerating the development of these fluxes by promoting quality and reusability. This solution supports the core system migration in the long term and all the other digital initiatives in the organization, providing increased governance and centralized visibility to all these processes.

Solution

The proposed solution is comprised of a middleware platform with the following components:

Enterprise Service Bus, the main responsibility of which is to provide reusable business-level services for the entire organization. This layer focuses on creating granular services to abstract the details of the backend systems to the consumers, which can be consumed directly or orchestrated in more complex business functions whenever needed.

API Manager, responsible for the management of the entire lifecycle of APIs for internal and external users. This layer focuses mainly on accelerating API and service usage, by providing self-service capabilities to teams and partners and a secure point of access to Credibom’s information.

Service Framework, a service development framework built on top of the middleware platform that provides out-of-the-box capabilities – such as monitoring, logging and error handling – to developed services, accelerating development by focusing developers time on the actual service logic implementation and improving overall solution quality with standardization, visibility and reusability.

Canonical Model, a continuously improved business data model representation that provides a common language across all the services in the organization, making them easier to analyze and understand by any technical or non-technical team.

Benefits

Reusability

with the creation of atomic business-oriented services that can be composed and orchestrated in more complex business functions.

Security

by enforcing authentication and authorization when accessing information, while protecting internal systems against threats and service misuse.

Control and visibility

by providing technical and business-level auditability, supported with detailed analytics.

Standardization and governance

with the definition of a scalable middleware architecture, a set of processes for development and a language that everyone can understand.

Quality and agility

with the development of a service implementation Framework.

"The big challenge was changing the integration paradigm, moving from point to point to centralized and standardized integration, ensuring a point of convergence for existing and new integrations as the bank's systems change and integration needs increase. At this moment, we can orchestrate and change services with little change cost for consumers. In addition to this, we can quickly and effectively monitor the use of services and ensure a better quality of service for the business."
